Battery car hype about to stumble over reality

Detroit News -- It's nearly time to put up or shut up.

At the end of September, battery-powered electric vehicles will be the toast of the biennial Paris Car show. France's Renault, the most vocal European manufacturer leading the charge to battery powered cars, will be parading its electric credentials and is ready to start selling the electric Fluence next year. You can bet that its stand at the Paris show will repeat the "zero emissions" mantra countless times. Renault's Japanese affiliate Nissan will launch the Leaf in the U.S. later this year and Europe early in 2011. Mitsubishi of Japan has already launched its MiEV battery car in Europe, and Peugeot and Citroen of France will shortly begin selling their versions of this car.

Your electric bill will go higher, but it will never be higher than the amount of money saved by not buying gasoline, which will go up,up, up in price, much faster than your electric bill.

My mind is still processing the fact that Ford did make electrics in 1967, and others did it in the late 70s. The way conspiracy theorists tell it is that the Big Three automakers, being all-powerful, suppressed the technology so they wouldn't lose profits. We'll see how these Euro models pan out in the new market.

I just hope, for our future generations, that we convert to electric cars and green energy power plants sometime soon. If we, as a society raised the earth's temp by a degree after approx. 150 yrs. since we became a truly industrialized species, I'd hate to see how much more we could heat it up.. with billions and billions of fossil-mobiles.

The battery era car needs a push by more automakers before it will drop in price. But the question still remains who will do the pushing, regulations or automakers.

The biggest reason is that Big Oil, auto manufacturers, politicians and big money behind politics don't want electric cars. I see plenty of cars on the side of the road everyday with multitudes of problems. And big scary trucks plow into cars everyday.

MOST plug in electric vehicles simply shift the pollution they cause to someone else's neighborhood where the power plant is located.

How can it be so hard when GM built one before. If you watch "Who Killed the electric car" you will see we might have already had the technology to continue on. Conservation keeps your money in your pocket.

People will buy the pure EV. People will hate their pure EV. People will tell everyone what a POS their electric car is. EV sales will falter. People will decide that EVs are worthless, and even after the battery problem is solved, EVs will be unsaleable to the jaded public.

Pity.. EVs could be a real solution if given the proper R&D investment, and time to mature the product, before attempting to sell mass quantities of it.

For once the O'Bammer haters may be right. It will be reasonable and possible to blame the failure of EVs squarely on his shoulders....

Another fine example of government run amuck.

No zero emissions here. We are going to export our clean natural gas and burn coal to generate electricity. Congress passed legislation to do that today. Our jewels in congress come through again.

While in favor I still realize that they will never be affordable for most people with middle and lower incomes just like solar.
