BP spreads blame for Gulf spill

CBC -- BP says a "sequence of failures" involving "multiple companies" led to the explosion and fire that killed 11 people and caused a massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

In a 193-page report released Wednesday and posted on its website, the company said the accident arose from “a complex and interlinked series of mechanical failures, human judgments, engineering design, operational implementation and team interfaces.”

The internal report was prepared by a team led by BP's head of safety and operations, Mark Bly.

The April 20 explosion and sinking of the Deepwater Horizon rig led to the leak of millions of barrels of oil into the Gulf became the worst ecological disaster in the United States in recent memory.

BP's report will likely lay the foundation for its legal defence in future

BP has a fairly long history of cutting corners, resulting in the death of American workers and environmental damage. It is their well and they must take 100% responsibility for all damage. If they think they can prove any of their subcontractors are partially responsible, they can try to recover some of the damages later in civil court.

Oh, it was everyone else's fault..? Right. The design of the well was British Petroleum's. As leasee of the drilling rig, maintenance was British Petroleum's responsibility. As has repeatedly come-out in the worker testimony, the decision making was British Petroleum's. Corporations claim outsourcing, like what BP does with the oil rigs, is cost effective. Clearly, the cost efficiency of blaming the other guy when things go wrong is built into the system. Only when the laws are passed that stipulate that the blame for mishaps must be shared in large part by the parent corporation as part of its fiduciary duty to check these contractors out. The corporations then can go back and sue the contractors if the problem was big enough. That will stop this shiftless dodging of responsibility. Oh, I totally disagree that it's the government's job to oversee corporations to stop them from screwing themselves. Governmental regulations are there to safeguard human lives, much like the laws of our state. Just like I would disagree that it's the job of the police to stop crimes from happening before they happen (that is, it's our duty to follow the law proactively), it's the corporations job to follow the laws that safeguard our health and its long-term financial interests. When they render a verdict, they can write pages about what they did. Why??? I'm sure BP could say it in 5 pages or less. It's just a way to bury info, because no one wants to go through ALL those pages - you'd fall asleep.
